Industrial Engineering & Design Services
In-house licensed professional engineers delivering structural, civil, mechanical, and process engineering for grain elevators, feed mills, biofuel facilities, and complex agri-industrial plants across North America.
Engineering Capabilities
Full-Spectrum In-House Engineering Expertise
Todd & Sargent’s engineering department is one of the most comprehensive in the agri-industrial construction industry. Our licensed professional engineers provide multi-disciplinary design services tailored to the unique structural, process, and regulatory demands of grain, feed, flour, and industrial processing facilities — and they work alongside the crews who build what they design.
Structural Engineering
Design of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and composite structural systems for industrial buildings, grain bins, silos, conveying galleries, transfer towers, and support structures. All designs are PE-stamped and code-compliant per IBC and applicable state standards. Our structural team holds deep expertise in slipform concrete construction — the preferred method for tall grain bins and concrete silos.
Process Engineering
Process flow diagrams (PFDs), equipment sizing, material balance calculations, capacity analysis, and system integration design for grain handling, feed manufacturing, flour milling, biofuel production, and bulk material handling systems. We engineer for maximum throughput, energy efficiency, and operational reliability.
Civil Engineering
Site grading and drainage design, stormwater management plans, pavement design, underground utility coordination, and shallow/deep foundation engineering. Our civil team maintains strong working relationships with state and local permitting authorities to streamline regulatory approvals.
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical system design for HVAC, industrial dust collection, pneumatic conveying, compressed air distribution, fire suppression, and process utility systems. Our mechanical engineers specify systems for the harsh industrial environments found in grain, feed, and chemical processing facilities.
Drafting & BIM Coordination
Our team of skilled drafters and CAD designers produces detailed, coordinated construction drawings using AutoCAD and industry-standard BIM tools. Drawings are cross-disciplinary coordinated to minimize field
conflicts, reduce RFIs, and support accurate material take-offs during procurement.
Code Review & Regulatory Compliance
Every Todd & Sargent project undergoes rigorous internal code review. We navigate IBC, NFPA 61, NFPA 652, OSHA, EPA, and state-specific regulations — including grain dust explosion prevention standards — so your facility is built to meet or exceed all applicable codes.
Engineering Built for Construction
When your engineer and your contractor are the same company, constructability is baked into every design decision from day one.
At Todd & Sargent, our engineers work shoulder-to-shoulder with project managers, field superintendents, and estimators throughout the design phase. This means structural systems are designed the way our crews build them, equipment is specified with installation clearances in mind, and material costs are tracked in real time as the design evolves. The result is a design package that is accurate, efficient, and ready to build — with fewer RFIs, fewer change orders, and fewer field conflicts.
All structural, civil, and mechanical drawings are signed and sealed by licensed Professional Engineers registered in the states and provinces where our projects are located. Our engineering team maintains PE licenses in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri, and several Canadian provinces.

Engineering Services FAQs
Does Todd & Sargent provide standalone engineering services, or only as part of design-build?
Todd & Sargent primarily delivers engineering as part of integrated design-build projects. However, we do discuss specific engineering support arrangements on a case-by-case basis. Contact our team to discuss your project requirements.
What structural engineering standards do you design to?
We design to IBC (International Building Code), AISC (steel), ACI (concrete), and applicable state building codes. For grain and agricultural facilities, we also follow ASABE standards for bin and silo design and NFPA 61/652 for dust explosion prevention.
Can your engineers handle multi-state or multi-province projects?
Yes. Our Professional Engineers maintain registrations in multiple US states and Canadian provinces. For projects in additional jurisdictions, we apply for reciprocal PE licensure as needed.
